2009 AWARDS
The culmination of the Sundance Film Festival is the Awards Ceremony. The competition Juries, comprised of individuals from the worldwide film community with original and diverse points of view, select films from both the Documentary and Dramatic categories to receive the following awards. The ranking award is the Grand Jury Prize which recognizes a film in the following categories: World Cinema Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, Dramatic Competition, and Documentary Competition as the best from the independent film community that year.
Directing Award
This award honors directors in the World Cinema Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, Dramatic Competition, and Documentary Competition.
Cinematography Award
This award celebrates excellence in cinematography in the World Cinema Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, Dramatic Competition, and Documentary Competition.
Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award
The Dramatic Competition Jury and the World Cinema Dramatic Competition Jury both choose a film to receive this specific award, which honors outstanding screenwriting.
Documentary Editing Award
The Documentary Competition Jury and the World Cinema Documentary Competition Jury both choose a film to receive this specific award, which honors excellence in editing.
Audience Awards
Audience Awards are bestowed upon films based on the results of ballots cast by Festivalgoers at the theatres after a screening. Audience Awards are presented to films in the Festival's World Cinema Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, Dramatic Competition, and Documentary Competition.
Jury Prize in Short Filmmaking
This prize is bestowed on one American and one International Short Film in the Competition that exemplifies outstanding vision and creativity.
Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize
Provided by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, this award is presented to the writer and director of an outstanding feature film focusing on science or technology as a theme, or depicting a scientist, engineer, or mathematician as a major character.
Special Jury Prizes
The World Cinema Documentary Competition, World Cinema Dramatic Competition, Dramatic Competition, and Documentary Competition juries may, at their discretion, select one film from each of the Festival's competitions to receive special recognition for their unique vision or excellence.
Sundance/ NHK International Filmmakers Awards
This annual award was created to support new voices in international cinema. It is presented to emerging film directors from several different areas of the globe to support them in realizing their next project.
