The Gayle Stevens Volunteer Award is given annually to a volunteer who has demonstrated a long-standing passion for and commitment to the work of the Sundance Institute. The recipient is announced ahead of Day One of the Festival, is granted special access to films, and is featured during the Festival.
For 2025, we are thrilled to recognize Josh Campbell, a volunteer who has truly gone above and beyond in his commitment to the Institute’s work.
Josh’s journey with the Sundance Institute began thanks to a friend, Mindy Atkinson, who encouraged him to get involved after years of sharing her enthusiasm for the Festival. Inspired by her passion, Josh took a leap and signed up as a volunteer. What started as a one-time opportunity quickly became a deeper and lasting relationship with the Sundance community.
Over the years, Josh has embraced a wide variety of roles, including Theater Crew, Box Office, Student Screenings, and Online Support. One standout moment came in 2023 when Josh stepped in at the last minute as Theater Manager for the Megaplex Gateway during its inaugural year. Despite it being his first time in such a role, Josh tackled the challenge with poise and dedication, making the experience a success for everyone involved.
Beyond the Festival, Josh contributes to local and community outreach programs, always looking for ways to lend a hand. His adaptability, reliability, and consistent positivity have made him an invaluable member of the Sundance team.
What truly sets Josh apart is his deep understanding of Sundance’s impact. To him, the Festival is more than a celebration of film — it’s a space where people can connect, discover new perspectives, and feel part of something greater. Whether it’s through programs like For the Locals or his work behind the scenes, Josh embodies this vision, fostering an inclusive and inspiring environment.
Josh credits much of his inspiration to the people he’s met along the way, particularly Kamaile Harris, a previous Gayle Stevens Award winner. Her positivity and encouragement left a lasting impression on Josh, shaping how he approaches his own work. As a leader, he uplifts those around him, helping others perform at their best while maintaining a spirit of camaraderie and optimism.
When asked what advice he would offer new volunteers, Josh keeps it simple yet impactful: “Jump in with both feet, embrace the chaos, and stay positive.” His approach underscores the collaborative spirit that defines the Sundance Film Festival and reminds everyone of the shared goal — to create unforgettable experiences for artists and attendees.
Josh’s dedication to the Festival is truly extraordinary. The relationships he’s built with fellow volunteers, staff, and filmmakers have enriched his experience, and his passion for sharing the magic of the Festival continues to drive his contributions year after year.
Please join us in congratulating Josh Campbell, the 2025 Gayle Stevens Volunteer of the Year! Josh, your unwavering commitment and enthusiasm are deeply appreciated, and we’re excited to see the continued impact you’ll have on the Sundance Festival community.
