Website Ticketing Technical FAQ

What does "magnetic card error" mean?

Magnetic card error means that there was a response from your bank that did not allow your card to be processed. This will happen in a variety of circumstances: If your address information does not match your billing information, if you've used a debit card that does not allow credit transactions, if your credit card number does not match the card type you selected (e.g. American express cards start with "3", Visa cards with "4", MasterCard with "5"), if you entered a card that we do not accept (e.g. Discover, Diner's Club, Japanese Credit Bank, etc.), of if your bank rejected the transaction for any reason. Please check your credit card information and verify that it's correct.
{edit_me}

I've completed my order and it took me back to the shopping cart again after the donation page. Why?

This is normal. Just click on the CHECKOUT box now. If you had included a donation, the Shopping Cart would be refreshed and the donation would have been added there.
{edit_me}

What does "run time error" mean with lots of programming "gobbledygook" on the screen?

It means your session timed out after 10 minutes of inactivity. That's why you see "Web tixs run time error." Please start over again.
{edit_me}

What does "system error" and "critical error" mean?

You may have entered the website when some maintenance was being done. Please return to the homepage and begin the registration again. If the problem persists, try again later in the day.
{edit_me}

Why didn't the page move to a new screen after I added all my personal information on the order form and clicked on next?

A *required field is probably missing information. Scroll back up the screen and check for any required red flags. Add the information and make sure your password and credit card number are still on the page. If you cannot find anything else wrong, then re-enter your password again, making certain it's 6 characters or longer.
{edit_me}

Why isn't the "Next " button working after I added/corrected the missing/incorrect data on the order form page?

Make certain you did not enter any spaces or dashes in your credit card number (spaces and dashes are acceptable in the phone number field, but not the credit card field). Also check below the word image box to see if a separate error message has appeared.
{edit_me}

What if I can't read the word image verification box?

Word Image Verification is built to look a little strange, this is for security purposes and is intentional. Look closely and do your best to enter the characters as you see them. And don't worry, you'll get multiple chances to get this right, so if you make a mistake you will get another chance. If you are still having trouble, please email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for assistance.
{edit_me}

Why isn't the "submit" button working on the "review your order" page?

Make sure you've checked the "I agree that this purchase is non-refundable and cannot be exchanged" box.
{edit_me}

Can I use a different credit card than the one I used to purchase my tickets/pass/package with?

Yes. For security reasons, the credit card information (if you have logged in) will not be flooded into the form.

No. There is no benefit to registering on the first or the last day of registration. Registration is NOT FIRST-COME, FIRST-SERVED for purchases. You have an equal chance of getting an early purchase time if you register on the first day or the last day of registration. Avoid the mad rush on the website and choose a time in the middle of the registration period. Registrants will be randomly assigned a date and time during last week of  October to purchase their Festival Pass and/or Ticket Package online or the third week of October to purchase their Locals Festival Pass/Ticket Package. There is no benefit to registering on the first or the last day of-registration.
{edit_me}

If I'm a Local can I register for both public and local Festival Pass/Ticket Package sales?

Yes. You may register for both. However, if you are successful in purchasing a Locals Festival Pass/ Ticket Package, you will not be allowed to purchase a public Festival Pass/ Ticket Package since all Locals Festival Pass/ Ticket Packages cover the entire Festival period. We restrict Festival Pass/ Ticket Package purchases to one item per Festival time period. If you are not successful in obtaining a Locals Festival Pass/ Ticket Package, you will still have a limited amount of time to register for a public Festival Pass/ Ticket Package.
{edit_me}

Will my Locals registration for Festival Pass/ Ticket Package also allow me to get a public Festival Pass/ Ticket Package time?

No. These are separation registrations. If you fail to purchase a Locals Festival Pass/ Ticket Package, you will have a limited amount of time to re-register for public Festival Pass/ Ticket Packages.
{edit_me}

When can I register for individual tickets?

You must register in order to be eligible to purchase individual tickets prior to the Festival. Beginning November 25, visit http://sundance.org/festival and complete a registration form. Registration for advance individual tickets is open through December 17th. A computer will randomly assign a date and time for registrants to purchase a total of 20 tickets (4 maximum per screening) online. Individual tickets sales will take place during the second week of January and are available based on availability. LOCALS: Registration dates for advance individual tickets are December 2 - 10. Registration does not guarantee ticket availability. See ADVANCE INDIVIDUAL TICKETS HELP for more info.

{edit_me}

Why do I have to register?

In order to provide customers with better service and decrease wait times, Sundance has implemented the registration system. You'll know exactly what time to place your order and spend less time trying to login to purchase tickets. In this way we'll be able to serve everyone in a consistent and efficient manner.
{edit_me}

Can I get tickets online without registering in advance?

Yes. You will be able to purchase any available tickets online beginning January 12, 2009. However, online tickets will be subject to a fee of $1.00 per ticket. All online tickets not purchased via advance registered sales must be picked up in person at a Main Box Office. Ticket sales for screenings occurring within the next 36 hours are only available at the Main Box Offices.
{edit_me}

Can I register more than once?

Please register only once for each type of registration (Festival Pass/ Ticket Package, Locals Festival Pass/ Ticket Package, advance individual ticket sales). Duplicate entries and attempts to circumvent the fairness of the system will be deleted at our discretion.
{edit_me}

Can I call to purchase tickets without registering?

No. All ticket purchases must be made online. The Sundance Ticketing Hotline cannot fulfill any ticket sales.
{edit_me}

What are the deadlines on purchasing tickets online or at the Main Box Office?

Available tickets for screenings will be open for purchase online up to 36 hours before the film start time. In-person tickets can be obtained at a Main Box Office up to two hours before the screening start time. At two hours before the start, you may go to the theatre of the screening you wish to attend and pick up a wait list number to join the wait list line.  Tickets will be sold there on a space available basis.
{edit_me}

What is the difference between a Main Box Office and a Theatre Box Office?

There are four "Main" Sundance Box offices: Park City, Salt Lake City, Sundance Resort, and Ogden. See BOX OFFICE WEB PAGE for addresses and hours. The Main Box Offices sell advance tickets, redeem vouchers in advance, provide Ticket Pickup services, do ticket exchanges, and they accept credit cards for these purchases. The Theatre Box Offices only offer sales of waitlist tickets about 15 minutes before if the theatre manager determines there is still available seating (please refer to Waitlist Policy). Theatre Box Offices accept only cash and vouchers.
{edit_me}

I selected "Ticket Pickup" but I didn't specify the city where I'd be picking up my tickets. Which Box Office has my tickets?

"Ticket Pickup" tickets are printed on-site at the main box office of your choice (Park City, Salt Lake City, Sundance Resort, or Odgen). Please allow enough time to pick up your tickets and get to your first screening. "Ticket Pickup" tickets are not at the theatres. If you have a late night or an early morning screening, make sure you plan to pickup your tickets before the box office closes or the night before.
{edit_me}

I've registered for Festival Pass/ Ticket Package sales. When will I get my designated date and time to make my purchase, as well as the website I purchase on?

An email will be sent on October 17, 2008 to all patrons who have registered, and will include the necessary account and website information. Festival Pass/ Ticket Package purchase dates fall during the last week of October. LOCALS: An email will be sent on October 8, 2008 to all patrons who have registered. Festival Pass/ Ticket Package purchase dates fall during the last two weeks of October.
{edit_me}

I've registered for individual ticket sales. When will I get my designated date and time to make my purchase as well as the website I purchase on?

National registrants will be notified by email on December 23, 2008 and the email will include the necessary account and website information. National individual ticket purchase dates fall during the second week of January. LOCALS: Your purchase date and time will be emailed to you on December 15, 2008, and purchase dates are in-person only at the SLC or Park City Main Box Office, January 3-4.
{edit_me}

Will any Passes and Packages go on sale after the package and pass sales period ends?

Yes. Once registered patrons have purchased their Festival Passes and Ticket Packages, any remaining Packages and Passes will be available on our website. Availability will be announced on the website. Be aware that availability will be extremely limited.
{edit_me}

Why is there a $10 "convenience fee" for phone orders during Ticket Package Fulfillment?

We encourage our patrons to purchase their tickets online at http://sundance.org/festival.
{edit_me}

How many Festival Passes/Ticket Packages can I buy?

You may purchase one Pass/Package per time period (maximum of two). For example, you may order one "A" week and one "B" week Ticket Package, but not two "B" Packages. Locals: All Pass/Package options cover the full Festival period. You cannot buy more than one Locals Festival Pass or Ticket Package and if you have purchased a Locals Pass/Package you will not be able to purchase a public Festival Pass/Ticket Package of any kind.
{edit_me}

How many tickets can I buy?

Via Ticket Package sales, you will be limited to the amount of tickets in your package, but you can supplement your Ticket Package with Advance Individual Ticket sales, in-person Main Box Office sales, or at the theatre waitlist tickets. For advance online ticket sales and in-person Main Box Office sales, you will be limited to 20 tickets. All screenings have a limit of 4 per purchase. For at the theatre tickets, you are limited to one per person.
{edit_me}

What if I'm out of town during my assigned time after I register and receive my time slot assignment, or the time you give me doesn't work for me?

If you are unable to meet the assigned Pass/Package purchase time, please arrange for a family member, friend, or co-worker to purchase for you. Sundance is unable to reschedule any times.

{edit_me}

What if I can't get through on the website?

We do not anticipate this being a problem, but if it does happen refresh the webpage (on a PC, hold down "control" and press "refresh" in your web browser).

{edit_me}

Can I have someone else (assistant, friend, family member) purchase my Pass/Package for me?

Yes, but the person picking up your Pass/Package will need to provide Sundance with your personal information.

{edit_me}

What if I miss my designated time slot?

You may purchase your Festival Pass/Ticket Package or Individual Tickets online anytime after your designated date and time begins. Purchases must be completed by Friday, October 30, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. MT for Festival Pass/Ticket Package sales, by Thursday, October 23, 2008 at 5:00 p.m. MT for Locals Festival Pass/Ticket Package sales. For Advance Individual Tickets: Purchases must be completed by Friday, January 9, 2009 at 5:00 p.m. MT. The 30 minute deadline referred to in your time slot assignment email pertains to the amount of time you have to complete your order online once you begin to make your purchase. LOCALS: Remember, your Advance Individual Ticket purchases must be done in-person at the SLC or Park City Box Office and must be completed during your assigned half-hour timeslot.

{edit_me}

Can I just get tickets at the theatre?

Yes, but the theatre box offices only accept cash and vouchers, and only sell to the waitlist (if seats are available) for the next screening only. Once the film is "sold out", you can join the waitlist line. See THEATRE BOX OFFICE HELP for more information.

{edit_me}

All I want to see is documentaries. How can I best do this?

Use our online film guide to search by film type for the documentaries you would like to see and have those screening codes ready when selecting tickets for your Ticket Package or when purchasing Individual Tickets.
{edit_me}

How do I get press credentials?

Visit the PRESS & INDUSTRY link on the Home Page for information and an application form. The deadline for applying is in early November 2008.

{edit_me}

I work in the film industry. Is there a home base for people like me?

Absolutely! Apply to join the Sundance Industry Office. Go to JOIN SIO for more information.
{edit_me}

When will Locals wristbands be given out?

Instead of wristbands this year, we are requiring that Locals register online (for free) between December 2 and December 10, 2008. Registrations will be validated by name and address. Duplicate registrations will be cancelled at our discretion. On December 15, 2008, registrants will be emailed a time slot when to appear at the appropriate Box Office. Purchase times will be either on January 3 or 4, 2009.

{edit_me}

When will Locals sales be?

Locals Ticket Sales Weekend is Saturday, January 3, 2008 and Sunday, January 4, 2008. You must be registered and have received a time slot prior to showing up at the Salt Lake or Park City Main Box Offices on those days. Sundance Resort and Ogden do not require registration. Proof of residency (Utah driver's license or a local utility bill with an out-of-state driver's license) must be presented before you can purchase tickets. The Park City Box Office will be open to only Locals residing in Summit County. Please see the LOCALS WEB PAGE for more information. Registrations will be validated by name and address. Duplicate registrations will be cancelled at our discretion.

{edit_me}

When is "Best of Fest" and when will tickets be distributed?

Registration FAQ

What does "Error 10900: Magnetic Card error" mean?

Magnetic card error means that there was a response from your bank that did not allow your card to be processed. This will happen in a variety of circumstances: If your address information does not match your billing information, if you've used a debit card that does not allow credit transactions, if your credit card number does not match the card type you selected (e.g. American express cards start with "3", Visa cards with "4", MasterCard with "5"), if you entered a card that we do not accept (e.g. Discover, Diner's Club, Japanese Credit Bank, etc.), or if your bank rejected the transaction for any reason. Please check your credit card information and verify that it's correct.

{edit_me}

What does "Error 10906: The card was not authorized by your provider" mean?

This is a bank response. The card holder may need to contact the bank for an explanation.

{edit_me}

What does "Error 17005: Registration count exceeds the maximum allowed" mean?

Registrations are limited to one per registration type and email address. You may have used your "Back" button and accidentally grabbed a second registration. Check your shopping cart and modify the amount to "1".

{edit_me}

What does "Error: 17001 Registration velocity is invalid!" mean?

This generally means that the email addresses you typed do not match in the order form; this can also mean that the email address you are using has already purchased this registration.

{edit_me}

Who can I contact if I don't see the answer to my question on this FAQ?

{edit_me}

Can I change the initial email address I used to register?

You will not be able to update your profile in any way (name, address, or email) once you've registered, so make sure you use an email address you intend to keep through the Festival.

{edit_me}

Why can't I enter the expiration date on my credit card?

This is a screen display issue that we are trying to resolve. This happens with Mac users only using Safari browsers. The site is actually entering in your credit card expiration date, but if you have a card that ends like 05/2008, only the first numbers are being displayed as 0/0 after you use the dropdown list. If you have a 12/2010 expiration date, you'd see 1/1. This will not stop your registration. After selecting the correct dates in the dropdown you can continue. You will see a summary page that displays your credit card expiration date correctly before the final submission of data. This is not an issue if you use Mozilla Firefox.

{edit_me}

Pass & Packages FAQ

 What does "Error 16011: Cannot sell these together" mean?

This means that you've attempted to purchase two Pass/Packages in the same time period (an "all week" with any other Pass/Package, two B week Pass/Packages, etc).

{edit_me}

What does "Error 16010: Membership already exists" mean?

Your ability to purchase expires once you complete any Pass/Package sale. This means that you may have purchased a Ticket Package A, received the confirmation number and email for that purchase, and now you've tried to re-enter the site and purchase a Ticket Package B.

{edit_me}

What does "Error 12614: Membership account code must be unique" mean?

This means that the account code you typed was incorrect. Check your email and verify that the account code is correct. If this persists, call the Ticketing Hotline (not the Call Center) and our staff will verify the account code.

{edit_me}

Who can I contact if I don't see the answer to my question on this FAQ?

{edit_me}

Advance Individual Tickets FAQ

I've received an error message at the end of the transaction when I hit "SUBMIT". What should I do?

DO NOT HIT SUBMIT AGAIN while the error message is still displayed. This may result in a second pending charge on your debit card that will tie up your funds. Please read the error message (too many items, screening is sold out) and correct your order information before hitting SUBMIT again.

{edit_me}

Why isn't the SUBMIT button working on the "Review your order" page?

Have you checked the "I agree…" box?

{edit_me}

To make sure I got the tickets I wanted, I quickly bought 8 tickets to start. How can I buy the remaining 12 tickets now? The website says it's outside my log on time.

The email confirmation you received states that you may make ticket selections online anytime after your assigned time begins, but all selections must be made AT THE SAME TIME. You will not be able to re-enter and make changes or additions to your order.

{edit_me}

I searched by date (or venue) and I see a long list of films, but the square button to the left of the film isn't working.

Click on the time, not the square graphic or the film title.

{edit_me}

I only selected one to four tickets. What does "The tickets count you selected exceeds the maximum amount allowed for your membership" mean?

This means the total amount of tickets in your entire shopping cart has exceeded 20 (or 12 if you have a Film Lover's Package). Modify the current amount or click on your shopping cart to modify the amount for another screening. You cannot select more than 20 in total. If you manage to proceed, you will receive another error message after we try to process your credit card and you may accidentally send another transaction to your credit card company.

{edit_me}

I can't find the CHECKOUT button. Where is it?

If you finish your selection process after failing to find any more acceptable tickets and you see only a "Next" box, click on the Shopping Cart and checkout from that screen.

{edit_me}

What does "Magnetic Card error" mean?

"Magnetic card error" means that there was a response from your bank that did not allow your card to be processed.

{edit_me}

Will Sundance release more tickets during the ticket selection period?

No. Inventory is limited and all available tickets were released for advance individual ticket sales on the first day of the selection period. Additional tickets received from refunds or organizations with unused tickets will not be released until the day of show at the Main Box Office. Those additional tickets will be not available for online sales.

{edit_me}

I'm getting a postal code error when I try to finish. What does this mean?

Credit cards are being verified by a match of zip code on the credit card information to the billing address you've entered on our site. Please correct the billing information or change your credit card information to proceed.

{edit_me}

I selected "Pickup at Box Office" but I didn't specify the city where I'd be picking up my tickets. Which Box Office has my tickets?

"Pickup" tickets are printed on-site at the Main Box office of your choice (Park City, Salt Lake City, Sundance Resort, or Odgen). Please allow enough time to pick up your tickets and get to your first screening. "Will Call" tickets are not at the theatres. If you have a late night or an early morning screening, make sure you plan to pick up your tickets before the box office closes or the night before.

{edit_me}

How can I be sure that my online ticket purchase process was successful?

A confirmation page will appear after you hit "submit" with your confirmation number. This confirmation number will be different than the one you received when you registered for ticket sales. You will also get an email to the address you submitted on the purchase form you received from .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address). You can always return at any time to the log on box and sign in with your email address and password. You will receive a display of your entire purchase history-registration fees, ticket/pass/package purchases, and product purchases.

Theatre Box Office FAQ

Aren't all the films sold out?

Rather than "Sold-Out", we say "Waitlist Only". When you see that a film is "Waitlist Only", this means that there are no longer advance tickets available. But this doesn't necessarily mean that you won't be able to gain access to a particular film. You still have options! It's possible that you could purchase a day-of-show ticket at the Main Box Office, or you could purchase a waitlist ticket at the theatre itself. Please refer to our "How To Buy Tickets" section of this website for further details.

{edit_me}

I was told at the Main Box Office that a particular film wasn't sold-out, but that the Main Box Office will not sell tickets to a film that's starting in 2 hours or less. How do I get tickets to that film now?

The Theatre Box Office will sell any available tickets to a screening at 30 minutes before the film begins. This occurs after the Main Box Office releases a ticket count to the Theatre Box Office so both Box Offices are not double-selling the same seats. If a waitlist line has already formed, the Theatre Box Office agents will start to sell to the first people in that line when the theatre manager gives an OK. Those tickets are hard tickets and patrons who purchase them can disperse from the line and enter whenever the theatre is opened.

{edit_me}

If there actual tickets for sale at the theatre, do the theatres take credit cards?

Sorry, no. Credit cards are only accepted at the Main Box Office and for online sales. Theatre Box Offices accept cash and vouchers only.

{edit_me}

Can I buy tickets for a later show at the Theatre Box Office? I understand it's not sold-out.

The Theatre Box Office will only sell tickets for the next immediate screening of the day. If the show you want to see is more than 2 hours later in the day, we suggest you buy tickets in advance at the Main Box Office. Otherwise, you are welcome to come back at least an hour before the film begins to purchase a waitlist ticket.

{edit_me}

What's the waitlist? How do I get my name on the list?

The waitlist is the line of patrons hoping to attend the next film. The line usually forms at least two hours before screening time. At some theatres, if the next screening is particularly popular, the waitlist line will form spontaneously right after the previous film is allowed in the theatre and the waiting space is cleared. This could happen as long as 3-4 hours before showtime. We do not take names in advance; instead we issue waitlist numbers to the patrons already in queue. Waitlist numbers will be distributed 2 hours before showtime (1 hour before for the first screening of the day) or at the theatre manager's discretion. You must be present to receive a waitlist number. At other Festivals, this is also known as the "rush line".

{edit_me}

How does the waitlist work?

The distribution of waitlist numbers begins at the theatre manager's discretion (waitlist numbers mark your place in the waitlist line), but this is no more than 2 hours in advance (1 hour before the first show of the day). Maximum of 1 waitlist number per patron. You must be present to receive a number. Each number allows you to buy one ticket. Saving places in waitlist line is not permitted. Once you receive your waitlist number, you may leave the line (you do not lose your place in line by leaving) —but you must return 30 minutes before scheduled screening time. Returning less than 30 minutes before scheduled screening time may result in the loss of your place in line. When you return, line up in the order of your waitlist numbers. Waitlist tickets go on sale at the theatre manager's discretion (usually 15 minutes before show time). All theatre ticket sales are cash or voucher only. Waitlist tickets are sold directly in the waitlist line.

{edit_me}

Once I'm sold a waitlist ticket, can I go straight to the theatre?

Waitlist tickets do not guarantee entrance. You will be admitted on a space available basis. Waitlist ticket holders must remain in line after purchase and wait for permission to go to the theatre entrance. If not admitted, a full refund will be issued based on your method of payment.

{edit_me}

It's 15 minutes before the screening and the Theatre Box Office is not yet selling waitlist tickets. Why the delay?

Waitlist tickets go on sale at the theatre manager's discretion (usually 15 minutes before show time). The sale start is determined by constantly evaluating the current house capacity, whether a traffic issue is affecting bus runs, if the weather is contributing to slow road conditions, etc. Each film is a unique situation. In some cases, the decision may be made to not sell to the waitlist at all or sell just a few tickets minutes after the scheduled start time when ushers can identify where open seats are.

{edit_me}

I thought I could get two waitlist numbers and then two waitlist tickets. Has something changed?

This is a change we implemented for the 2007 Festival based on suggestions from patrons and volunteers. You may only take one waitlist number and we will only sell you one ticket per waitlist number.

{edit_me}

What are my chances of getting in?

It's very unpredictable and sometimes changes from year to year. At the larger theatres (Eccles, Racquet Club, Library, Rose Wagner), we're usually very optimistic about seating waitlist patrons. Many Festivalgoers enjoy films via only waitlist entries and consider the waiting experience as part of their Festival adventure. But please remember that the theatre is usually technically "sold-out" and if every patron with a ticket or pass does attend, no one from the waitlist can be allowed in.

{edit_me}

How much are waitlist tickets?

Waitlist tickets are $15. Sales are cash only and exact change is appreciated.
{edit_me}

When should I be realistic about not getting into the theatre?

If the waitlist line is over 200 people, you should carefully consider if you still want to wait. We do not issue waitlist numbers over number 200 and have never been able to entirely seat 200 waitlist patrons. The crowd liaisons know the average number of successful waitlisters at each theatre. Ask them for advice. Find out where the last number holder is and make a decision. Be aware that at the Eccles Theatre, the waitlist line might hold 100+ people inside, so the outside line count might be misleading.

{edit_me}

Are there student/senior discounts in the waitlist line?

Sorry, no. All waitlist tickets are $15.

{edit_me}

Can I save seats?

Please do not save seats. We would like everyone (actual ticket holders, pass attendees, and patrons in the waitlist line) to be able to get in and a "saved" seat is considered an unavailable seat. This will actually lower our theatre capacity and some legitimate ticket holders (including your late friends) might be turned away.

{edit_me}

My friend is inside holding a seat for me and the ticket agents won't sell me a waitlist ticket.

The irony of your friend "saving a seat" for you is that the theatre team volunteers have asked your friend if someone is sitting there and he's said "yes" so that seat isn't being counted as an available seat. As a result, we've stopped selling waitlist tickets since we believe all the seats are taken. Also, you understand that we cannot fairly sell you a ticket ahead of the people who have been waiting in line before you took your place in the queue.
{edit_me}

My friend is calling me on my cell phone and tells me he sees empty seats inside the theatre. Why are they no longer selling to the waitlist?

If the film has already begun, the theatre manager will stop seating waitlist patrons if open seats are not easily accessible, if other patrons will be disturbed, if the opening of a back door lets light leak into the auditorium, if seating in the dark can be considered dangerous (example: the steep balcony at Eccles), etc. This is done in the interest of the best customer service for the seated patrons and the safety of all theatre-goers.

{edit_me}

I have a waitlist ticket and I want to sit by my friends who are already inside and had hard tickets. Can I do that?

Dependent on what seats are available, their location, and various theatre policies, you may be ushered to specific seats that are being held for waitlist patrons (such as the balcony in the Eccles Theatre). If your party is split up, you should make arrangements to meet somewhere later and advise your friends to not save a seat for you that you probably cannot get to. Enjoy the show and you all can discuss the film later!

{edit_me}

Are there waitlist lines for panel discussions?

Yes. All the waitlist rules apply to panels at the Prospector or Yarrow as well.

{edit_me}

Can I start waiting for the next film if I don't get into this one?

In most cases, you usually can, but this is dependent on crowd control and the theatre manager's discretion.

{edit_me}

I'm late and I have a hard ticket (or a pass). Will I be allowed into the theatre?

All patrons must be seated 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time or risk losing their seats. There are no refunds for late-comers. The theatre manager has the discretion to seat late-comers if seats are still available and can be accessed without disturbing other patrons, interrupting a speaker, or allowing light leakage onto the screen.

{edit_me}

Are there "standing room only" tickets?

Utah fire regulations do not allow us to sell "standing room" tickets. Every patron must be seated. No one can sit in the aisles or stand at the back of theatre.

{edit_me}

I was late and I couldn't get into the theatre after the film started. Can I get a refund?

We're sorry, but all tickets are non-refundable. Theatres will only issue refunds for waitlist ticket holders who were just sold tickets in the past 15 minutes but did not gain entrance to the theatre.

{edit_me}

Sundance films never seem to start exactly at the time printed in the film guide, so why won't they allow me in 15 minutes late?

Actually, in 2007 98% of our film presentations started on schedule. "On time" refers to when introductions to Sundance films begin, not when the film is on the screen. Patrons need to be seated 15 minutes prior to any speakers, trailers, shorts, or film presentation.

{edit_me}

What's a Sun Voucher?

A Sun Voucher is a voucher issued by theatre management. If you qualify for a Sun Voucher the Theatre Manager will explain its limitations to you.

{edit_me}

What are the voucher restrictions?

Vouchers are non-refundable. They cannot be exchanged at the theatre door for access, but must be exchanged for a hard ticket at the Main Box Office or Theatre Box Office prior to encountering the ticket taker. Vouchers for Ticket Package A may not be used in the B week; B Ticket Package vouchers may not be used for the A week; SLC Preferred Package vouchers may not be used for Park City screenings.

{edit_me}

How do I use vouchers?

Vouchers must be exchanged for an actual ticket prior to entry at the theatre. Vouchers are non-refundable. There are special restrictions for some vouchers, depending on the type of ticket package you have purchased. At any of the Main Box Offices, you may exchange your voucher (without an exchange fee) up to 2 hours before a screening begins. Best availability during the Festival is early morning on the day of show. At the theatre, you must join the waitlist sales line to exchange your voucher for an at-the-theatre ticket. Waitlist sales begin 30 minutes before the screening begins.

{edit_me}

Someone wants to sell me a voucher for a very popular screening. Should I buy it?

No, please don't buy anyone's vouchers! A voucher is only a form of payment and will not guarantee you admittance to any particular screening. You cannot present the voucher at the theatre entrance. You will still need to stand in the waitlist line for a waitlist ticket and only then can you give the ticket agent the voucher in lieu of payment. Also, certain vouchers have restrictions - if someone is selling or giving you an "A" Ticket Package voucher and it's Wednesday of Festival week ("B" week), that voucher has expired. There are no cash refunds for any vouchers.

{edit_me}

Can I use a voucher for one of the ticketed panels at Prospector or Yarrow?

Yes, vouchers may be exchanged for ticketed panel discussions.

{edit_me}

Can I sell my waitlist ticket since I just bought a real ticket from someone who had an extra?

You may, but your buyer must queue up in the same order you were in the line. You do risk misrepresenting the access benefits of the waitlist ticket, since waitlist entry is never guaranteed. If your buyer tries to enter the theatre immediately, they will be turned away from the door if we have not started allowing that set of numbered waitlist tickets into the theatre. It will also possibly be difficult to get your buyer inserted into the waitlist line if the people who have been waiting in order believe that your buyer is suddenly "cutting in." If you tendered a voucher for payment and the buyer does not get into the film, they will not be refunded in cash, but will receive your original voucher in return.

{edit_me}

I bought a ticket on eBay. How do I know it's real?

You will not be able to tell if it's real, but we will be able to. Buying resold tickets is always a "buyer beware" situation. Tickets will be scanned at all theatres for 2009, so even the best copies of fraudulent tickets will be immediately rejected. If your ticket is fraudulent, we will not admit you, refund your money, or be able to sell you another ticket. You will need to ask for re-dress via eBay's fraud protection policies only (or StubHub or whatever broker you used).

{edit_me}

Can you stop the people outside the theatre who are scalping tickets for $100 (or whatever amount)?

Utah has no scalping laws that allows us to stop people from re-selling tickets. We are usually restricted to only requesting that these people go further off-site and onto public property to sell their tickets. Unfortunately, we usually do not have enough volunteer help to monitor that.

{edit_me}

There's an "invitation only" ticket for an official Sundance party (Opening Night Party, Filmmaker's Dinner, etc.) for sale on an auction site. Is it real?

Possibly it's real, but "invitation only" also means there's a corresponding invite list with specific names. Obtaining a ticket (or a fraudulent reproduction) will not alone get you into such a party. You will be turned back at the entrance. Do not purchase such tickets.

{edit_me}

My first screening is at this theatre. I thought I could pick up my tickets at the first place I was to see a film. Why aren't my tickets here?

Sundance eliminated Will Call at the theatres during the 2004 Festival. All Ticket Pickup is at any Main Box Office. Patrons who purchased individual tickets and did not order express delivery must pick up their tickets during business hours at the Main Box Offices. Note: You must present photo ID to be issued your tickets. Please pick up your tickets at least TWO hours before your first screening time. Tickets for screenings after 7:00 p.m. must be picked up during regular box office hours. Please plan accordingly. You will not be let into the theatre with only a confirmation letter and refunds will not be issued.

{edit_me}

I need a receipt for my waitlist purchase. How do I obtain one?

Our at-the-theatre tickets are three part forms. The middle part (marked "patron") is your receipt.

{edit_me}

I didn't pickup my tickets at the Main Box Office in time, but I have my confirmation letter. Will the theatre staff let me into the film?

Sorry, no. Our Theatre Box Office volunteers have no way of quickly verifying if your confirmation letter is authentic or if your tickets have already been issued and collected.

{edit_me}

Can I smoke in the waitlist line outside?

Only if the waitlist line is on public property. Both the Eccles and Library are considered school grounds. According to Utah law, you may not smoke anywhere (including parking lots) on school premises. Be careful around propane heaters. Please be considerate and dispose of your litter in a receptacle.

{edit_me}

Will I be able to see the celebrities enter the theatre up-close?

For security reasons, some of our theatres have dedicated celebrity entrances that are covered tents and are staffed by security personnel in addition to any personal bodyguards that might be accompanying the actor/filmmaker. Only properly credentialed press and staff will be allowed inside. You may be able to see a celebrity exit from a vehicle on the way to the tent, but be aware that if you're a Ticket Holder, you need to be seated 15 minutes prior to the scheduled start time or risk losing your seat.  Please heed the instructions of the staff near all entrances. Your safety is our concern as well.

{edit_me}

Will [blank] be at his/her film in person?

[Blank] was invited, but we never for sure know who will be in attendance for their film or if they will attend all the showings.

{edit_me}

My friend is a volunteer/staff person and I was given their volunteer voucher so I could see a movie. How do I use the volunteer voucher?

Unfortunately, you will not be able to use their voucher. Sundance instituted a policy change for 2009 regarding volunteer vouchers. Only volunteers with accompanying credentials will be able to use vouchers for entrance. Please take advantage of the waitlist opportunities if you do not have a pre-purchased ticket.

{edit_me}

I just attended a show that's probably going to get an "R" rating or worse when it's released by Hollywood. I wasn't expecting that. Can I get a refund?

Sorry, no. All Sundance films are unrated. Viewer discretion is advised. In some cases, we may post some content warnings, but most films will not have any "ratings".

{edit_me}

If a film has significant technical difficulties and is cancelled what happens?

Once a decision is made to cancel a screening, as you exit the theatre, ticket takers will exchange your original hard screening ticket or waitlist ticket for a Sun Voucher. You can use this voucher to get a ticket for a rescheduled screening of this film or any other Festival screening on a space available basis at the Theatre Box Offices or the Main Box Office. This will be your only chance to receive a voucher. For information on whether this screening will be rescheduled, please see the Daily Update Sheets located at the information booth or contact the Main Box Office. If it is already known when the film will screen again or when its next scheduled screening is, the theatre manager will announce that. Please remain seated while the staff prepares the Sun Vouchers to distribute upon exiting. No refunds will be given. Pass Holders do not receive a Sun Voucher.

{edit_me}

Can I exit the theatre once I'm seated?

Yes. There will be a dedicated re-entry door at each theatre. You must have your ticket stub and a hand-stamp to re-enter.

E-Mail Problems FAQ

When should I expect emails from the Sundance Film Festival?

Sundance emails should arrive in your inbox within 24 hours of your registration or merchandise purchase. If you have registered, you will receive an email again according to our published notification dates of purchase time assignments (October 17, 2008 for public Festival Pass/Ticket Package times, October 8, 2008 for Locals Festival Pass/Ticket Package purchases, December 15, 2008 for Locals weekend sales times, and December 23, 2008 for public individual ticket purchases). If our email is not getting to your inbox, then we suggest checking your spam folder, bulk folder, or junk folder. If you find our email, then you will need to find a way to inform your mail application that it is not spam. Most likely the course of action is to select our email and click on the Not Spam or Not Junk button if available.

{edit_me}

Why should I make "@sundance.org" email addresses "trusted senders" and what is "whitelisting"?

During various times during the Sundance Film Festival package/pass/ticket registration and purchase periods, you can expect various emails with important information (such as purchase notification times, password verification, receipts, requests for RSVPs, or credential pictures, etc) to be sent to you. Please do not let these emails fall into your Spam, Junk, or Bulk folders to be accidentally deleted. Instead, we ask that you make all of our addresses "trusted senders" (also known as "whitelisting").

{edit_me}

I've already lost a Sundance email. How do I retrieve it?

Please find your email provider listed on this FAQ. After most whitelisting instructions is a "if you've already lost a Sundance email" instruction. If you still cannot retrieve the email and it contains time-sensitive information, please email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or call our Ticketing Hotline at 435-776-7878 (M-F 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. MT). Remember that you still must make our @sundance.org email addresses trusted senders or the re-sent email will fall into the same black hole again.

{edit_me}

What if my spam filter requires a response from you before it delivers your email?

We will make every effort to respond to those emails, but when we send out 10,000 time slot emails to all registrants there are upwards of hundreds of out-of-office replies mixed in with email verification requests. We have limited staff to monitor automated emails, so that's why we ask you to be proactive and turn off such verification requests for our @sundance email addresses.

{edit_me}

I registered or purchased using my workplace email address (a corporate domain). How do I get my missing Sundance emails unblocked?

If you registered or purchased using a corporate, non-profit, or educational email address that handles enormous volumes of users and email messages (mycompany.com, mycharity.org, myuniversity.edu), be aware that the email administrator for your company/non-profit organization/school may have installed an additional security firewall or spam blocker (such as McAfee Spam Killer 2005 or Barracuda Spam Firewall) that might block @sundance.org emails without any warnings to you or with any way to recover them. Contact your local system administrator if you see evidence of "lost" Sundance emails. Based on their corporate policy, you may have to switch email addresses if they will not grant trusted sender status to @sundance.org. Switching emails can easily be done by logging in with your original email address and password on the Box Office registration or Merchandise opening screens at http://www.sundance.org.
