"My biggest memory is from 2007 – there’s a filmmaker trip and you get on these buses. And I just remember looking at my schedule and saying ‘Okay, here we go.’ And, the film I haven’t shown yet. And we got on there and it’s just a bus full of all these filmmakers. And you’re getting on and you think you’re gonna be sitting next to Quentin Tarantino and Steven Soderbergh, right?

But you’re not... I remember sitting next to this Korean animator who was talking about how he’s experimenting with the anthropomorphic shape of the human head and how his movie’s all about expressionism. And he spent the whole bus ride talking about that. And it’s just wonderful, you know? And I remember thinking, ‘This is what it’s about.’

All the other stuff, all the angling, and shifting, and who’s who. But being on that bus going to the Sundance Resort, there are all of these filmmakers, with all of their different experiences and hopes. That was special. You realize that telling stories in sharing something. All you do is think about your own film, and then you get on that bus and you realize that there are all these other people who have been doing the same thing. And you realize that telling stories is an act of generosity. And the fact that everyone can just sit on that bus and come together is pretty special."
